Tips for Photographing Fireworks and Holiday Crowds
Fireworks are one of the most rewarding subjects an event photographer can attempt, but they reward preparation more than luck. Whether you are shooting a large municipal show near Memphis or a smaller gathering in a DeSoto County park, a few habits make a real difference to the pictures you bring home.
Arrive early and choose your angle
The best spots fill up long before dusk. Arriving early lets you scout a position with a clear view of the sky, ideally with something recognisable in the foreground, such as a skyline, a line of trees or a crowd silhouetted against the glow. Check the wind direction if you can: standing upwind keeps smoke from drifting between you and the bursts.
Steady the camera
Fireworks look their best with longer exposures, typically a few seconds, which turn each shell into graceful trails of light. A tripod, or even a wall or railing, keeps the frame sharp. Use a low ISO, a mid-range aperture and manual focus set near infinity so the lens does not hunt in the dark. On a phone, night or long-exposure modes can produce surprisingly good results if you hold still or brace the device.
Don't forget the people
Some of the most memorable holiday images are not of the sky at all. Children waving sparklers, families sharing a picnic blanket and faces lit up in reds and greens tell the story of the evening. Shoot these moments in the softer light before the show begins, and always be respectful: ask before photographing strangers up close, especially children.
Safety and practical planning
- Check official city or event pages for timings, parking and any rules on coolers or tripods, as these can change from year to year.
- Keep a safe distance from launch areas and follow staff instructions.
- Bring a small torch, spare batteries and water, and plan your route home, as traffic after large shows can be slow.
