Photographing Chennai's landmarks: what to expect at each place
The places listed above cover a wide slice of Chennai, from the seafront to temple towns and leafy green spaces. Each one rewards a slightly different approach with the camera, so here is some practical context before you set out.
Coast and heritage
Marina Beach is one of the longest urban beaches in the world and is at its most photogenic around sunrise, when fishing boats, walkers and soft eastern light fill the frame. Strong currents make swimming unsafe, so treat it as a place to watch and photograph rather than to swim. Further south, the Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO-listed Pallava-era monument built from granite beside the Bay of Bengal. It is a day trip by road along the East Coast Road, and early or late visits avoid harsh midday glare on the stone.
Temples, monuments and museums
The Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore is known for its colourful gopuram and the busy streets around its tank. Remember it is an active place of worship: dress modestly, remove footwear and ask before photographing people or rituals, as rules on cameras can apply inside. Valluvar Kottam honours the poet Thiruvalluvar with a stone chariot, while the Government Museum in Egmore, one of the oldest museums in India, is famous for its bronze collection. Museums often have their own photography policies, so check at the entrance.
Green spaces and shopping
Guindy National Park is a rare protected forest inside a city, home to blackbuck and spotted deer; a longer lens and patience help. Spencer Plaza and Express Avenue are better suited to casual visits, food and a break from the heat.
General tips
- Check official sources for current timings and entry rules before travelling.
- Carry water and plan around traffic; the Chennai Metro and suburban trains can save time.
- Respect privacy, especially at festivals and religious sites.
